An important dog didn’t bark in Geneva: the United States did not announce that it was withdrawing from the drafting process of the Global Compact on Refugees (as it has from the Global Compact on Migration).
Simon Henshaw, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, delivered the U.S. statement. The statement is generally favorable to the CRRF and UNHCR’s initial implementation efforts, and makes no mention of the New York Declaration (which Ambassador Haley, in announcing withdrawal from the Migration Compact process, described as “simply not compatible with U.S. sovereignty”).
