On UN Day in 1959, Eleanor Roosevelt hosted a radio program honoring World Refugee Year. Her featured guests included Doris Day, Joseph Schildkraut and Gregory Peck. Mrs. Roosevelt called the situation of refugees in Europe “a blot on the conscience of all mankind.” The UN has re-released the program, now with an introduction and closing remarks from Volker Turk, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for International Protection.
For a comment on today’s situation in Europe, I recommend a recent episode from the Center for Investigative Reporting’s Reveal podcast called “The Smuggler.”
Both are well worth a listen.
